The Crossbeam Systems® NPM-8200 network processing module is designed for high-speed, high port density security. The NPM-8200 employs the latest in network processor silicon technology together with Crossbeam’s X-Stream™ secure flow processing technology to deliver users the ultimate in power and control for completely securing a network infrastructure.

FLOW CLASSIFICATION

The NPM performs high speed flow classification based on the user configuration. For example, a user can configure flow rules by source/destination IP address, source/destination port, protocol, and VLAN tag. The NPM uses these configurable rules to service the incoming flows based on the specified action (drop, load balance, pass to a specific application module, etc). This configuration provides users with complete control over servicing the network traffic.

LOAD BALANCING AND DYNAMIC REROUTING

The NPMs dynamically load balance flows (when specified to do so) based on Crossbeam’s patent-pending load balancing algorithm. This algorithm uses detailed information on the utilization of the application module resources to create the most optimal load distribution within the system. The algorithm also instantly recognizes failed application modules so the NPM can instantly re-direct flows to either a synchronized or un-synchronized backup application module.

The NPM-8200 Features:

• 8 Gigabit interfaces using Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) modules

• Supports 802.1Q VLAN environments. Up to 4,096 VLANs are supported on the NPM-8200.

• QoS Policy-based rate limiting

 

FLOW SEQUENCING

This unique feature allows users to instruct the NPMs on how to service flows through multiple security engines. For example, a user could specify that all traffic must go through a set of firewall modules (load balanced) but a copy of each packet must also be directed to a set of IDS sensors both inside and outside of the firewall. This capability is known as parallelization since it allows for multiple copies of each packet to be processed by many security engines simultaneously. A user could also instruct the NPM to send traffic from a set of firewall modules and then to a set of anti-virus proxies before entering the trusted network. This feature is called serialization since it allows packet servicing by multiple security engines to happen in a serial fashion.

QoS

The NPM-8200 supports Crossbeam’s Rate Limiting feature which allows the user to attach a specific rate limit and burst limit to any flow that enters the system. This can be done to limit specific customers or departments (designated by VLAN tag) to a specific bandwidth usage, or even to limit certain protocols.
